Origin of 'Charlie' (nickname for Viet Cong soldiers)

Got interested in the trivia related to the origin of the word 'Charlie' that was used to refer to Viet Cong soldiers after coming across an article about 'Apolcalypse Now' and the similarlity between Kurtz and Pol Pot.

Check the url about Viet Cong
and NATO phonetic alphabets to understand the origin of this word 'Charlie'.

I always thought it came from the NATO military alphabet, i.e. A=Alpha, B=Bravo, C- Charlie, etc. My uncles and my dad who were in Vietnam, said that they used t refer to the Viet Cong as Victor Charlie, but I'm sure it eventually just got shortened down to "Charlie." Though "gook" was a probably more commonly used term than "Charlie."
